My computer is getting slower every day. A cold start takes up to 7 minutes now. Although I optimized the booting procedure the effect is only noticeable by seconds if at all. Today I need three tries to boot my pc.

I checked my hard drive and my ram but there is no problem at all. I never had a blue screen too. My firewall and my anti-virus software is up to date. In addition I maintain the computer with SpyBot and Tune Up Utilities and I also defragmentated the booting partition. Nothing helps.

Because the SATA hard drive didn’t work very well on the main board (the system freezed completely after a random time) I think the main board is the part which causes the lags.

I guess I have to change the main board soon. I already made a choice to buy a Gigabyte main board then. Including a high power Intel Core 2 Duo, OCZ ram and a SATA DVD double layer burner. The prices are pretty low at the moment. It’s amazing that with the same amount I bought the hardware I am using now I get such fast computer parts.

Just an hour ago my computer was shutting down without any warning. I wondered what happened. But soon I figured this should be a heat problem maybe on the graphics card because after the displays went black the music played a couple of seconds. I opened the computer and demounted the graphics card. The card was so hot I had to put it down immediately. I wondered why the big ventilator on top of the GC didn’t cool the card down? I let the card cool down and mounted it back into the computer and the PC worked as nothing would have happened. I googled a bit and found the ATITool. This is an overclocking tool for graphic cards. But you can also change the venting speed. This is the only adjustment I did. The ventilator is louder now but the temperature is stable at 55°C (131°F).

Ungefähr vor einer Stunde hat sich mein Rechner ohne Vorwarnung heruntergefahren. Zuerst wunderte ich mich, was jetzt wieder ist. Aber bald kam der Verdacht auf, dass es wahrscheinlich ein Hitzeproblem ist. Wahrscheinlich auf der Grafikkarte, weil die Musik nachdem die Bildschirme dunkel geworden sind, noch eine Weile weiterspielte. Ich öffnete den Rechner und baute die Grafikkarte aus. Die Karte war so heiß, dass ich sie sofort ablegen musste. Ich hab mich gewundert, warum der große Ventilator auf der GK diese nicht herunter kühlte. Also ließ ich die Karte abkühlen, baute sie wieder ein und der Rechner startete, als wär nichts gewesen. Ich habe dann ein wenig gegoogelt und dabei das ATITool gefunden. Dieses ist ein Übertaktungstool für Grafikkarten. Man kann aber auch die Ventilatorgeschwindigkeit ändern. Das ist dann auch die einzige Veränderung, die ich vornahm. Der Ventilator ist zwar nun lauter, aber die Temperatur bei 55°C stabil.

Finally I made to my favourite computer store to replace my defect RAM and my defect hard drive which both I bought lately. The results are so-so. The RAM was really defect so I got it replaced and now my machine runs with 2GB. That’s great. The bad news (which are also good news) is that my hard drive is fully functional. And the man behind the counter assumed that my SATA controller might be defect. That can be because my older hard drive is an IDE-HD and so I got no chance to test the SATA controller when I bought the mainboard last year. So now I have to replace the mainboard. I really don’t wanna know what comes after the replacement of the mainboard. Very annoying :S.

Endlich habe ich es zu meinen bevorzugten Computergeschäft geschafft und wollte dort meinen kaputten RAM-Riegel und meine defekte Festplatte umtauschen. Beides habe ich erst vor kurzem gekauft. Das Ergebnis ist allerdings nicht sehr berauschend. Der RAM-Riegel war tatsächlich defekt. Ich habe einen Ersatz bekommen und jetzt rennt meine Maschine mit 2GB Das ist toll. Die schlechten Nachrichten (welches eigentlich auch gleichzeitig gute Nachrichten sind) sind, dass die Festplatte einwandfrei funktioniert. Der Man hinterm Counter vermutete, dass mein SATA-Controller auf meinem Mainboard kaputt ist. Das kann durchaus sein, denn meine ältere Festplatte ist noch eine mit IDE-Schnittstelle und somit hatte ich bisher noch keine Gelegenheit, den SATA-Controller ausgiebig zu testen, seit dem letzten Jahr, als ich das Mainboard gekauft habe. Also muss ich jetzt das Mainboard ersetzen. Ich will gar nicht wissen, was nach dem Austausch des Mainboards als nächstes kommt. Sehr ärgerlich :S.

Sometimes you can’t listen to this very intelligent phrase. This is the time when your inner voice tells you: upgrade, damn you, upgrade. So I thought maybe updating the hardware of my computer would be a nice idea. My hard drive is almost full and with Windows you’ll never have enough RAM. And while I am at installing the system on the new hard drive why not buying a anti-virus software and Staroffice instead of OpenOffice. After taking a several hour look in the internet I decided to buy the components in a valued shop nearby and order the software via internet. First I ordered the software which came very quickly. But surprise, surprise! I bought an upgrade of an anti-virus instead of the full version. So I had to buy the full version too in the shop where I bought the hard drive and the RAM. It is not that I never had assembled a computer before. So that’s very easy. Unplug everything from the computer. Insert RAM and hard drive and connect it with the power supply and the motherboard. But surprise, surprise! I don’t have a cable to connect my hard drive to the motherboard. Ok, than I decided to put in the RAM first and try the speed. But surprise, surprise! Nothing happened. The ventilation of the power supply, the processor and the graphics card worked but nothing happened. I knew that I had a cable for connecting the hard drive to the motherboard at work left. I grabed the computer, all the components and software and drove to work. The RAM still won’t work but the hard drive does very well. Ok, I installed XP Pro and when finished that I packed everything and drove home again. The next thing were to install all peripheral devices. But surprise, surprise! A couple of minutes after the system booted it hang-up. No reaction to mouse or keyboard input. F***ing computer! It’s a good thing I didn’t my former installation of the system and didn’t demount the older hard drive. So I’m using the former system installation now. The second faster hard drive is now only for storage of data and the RAM is pretty bullshit. So learn this: never change a running system!

Manchmal kann man einfach nicht auf diesen intelligenten Ausdruck hören. Das ist meist der Augenblick, wenn die innere Stimme schreit: rüste auf, verdammt nochmal! So dachte ich, es wäre mal wieder an der Zeit die Hardware meines Rechners aufzurüsten. Meine Festplatte ist eh fast voll und unter Windows kann man eh nie genug RAM haben. Und wenn ich schon mal das System neu aufspiele, kann ich auch gleich noch eine Kaufversion eines Anti-Viren Programms installieren und Staroffice anstelle von OpenOffice klingt auch gut. Nachdem ich einige Stunden im Internet mit Recherche verbracht habe, entschied ich mich, die Hardware in einem geschätzten Laden in der Nähe zu kaufen und die Software über das Internet zu bestellen. Zuerst habe ich die Software bestellt, die auch sehr schnell da war. Aber welch Überraschung! Ich habe ein Upgrade der Anti-Viren Software gekauft anstelle der Vollversion. Also musste ich diese zusammen mit dem RAM und der Festplatte auch noch kaufen. Es ist ja nicht so, dass ich noch nie einen Computer zusammen gebaut hätte. Für mich ist das inzwischen total einfach. Alles vom Computer abstecken. RAM einstecken, Festplatte einbauen und mit Strom und dem Motherboard verbinden. Aber welch Überraschung. Ich habe kein Datenkabel für die Festplatte. Ok, dann entschied ich mich, zuerst den RAM einzubauen und zu schauen, wie groß der Geschwindigkeitsschub ist. Aber welch Überraschung! Nichts tat sich. Die Ventilatoren von Netzteil, Prozessor und Grafikkarten liefen, aber das wars schon. Ich wusste, dass ich auf Arbeit noch Datenkabel für Festplatten übrig hatte. Also packte ich den Rechner, die einzubauenden Komponenten und die Software zusammen und fuhr in den Betrieb. Der RAM wollte weiterhin nicht funktionieren, aber die Festplatte tat brav ihren Dienst. Ok, also XP Pro installierd und nachdem das fertig war, wieder alles zusammen gepackt und ab nach Hause. Der nächste Schritt war, alle Peripherie-Geräte zu installieren. Aber welch Überraschung! Immer ein paar Minuten, nachdem Windows gebootet hatte, hängte sich das System auf. Keine Eingabe von Maus und Tastatur half. Sch*** Computer! Nur gut, dass ich die vorherige Installation vom System nicht entfernt und die alte Festplatte nicht ausgebaut hatte. So läuft der Rechner jetzt mit der vorherigen Installation. Die neue, schnellere Festplatte ist halt jetzt nur zum Speichern von Daten und der RAM ist schöne Scheiße. Merke: never change a running system! … habe fertig!
